Makoko is a slum neighbourhood located in Lagos. It was founded as a fishing village, but Makoko has eventually developed into a slum as a result of population explosion. Makoko village is essentially self-governing with a very limited government presence and local security being provided by area boys. Makoko Floating School is located in Makoko village. It was designed by a Nigerian architect Kunlé Adeyemi in collaboration with the Makoko Waterfront Community. Makoko Floating School s a three-story high building, which was completed in March 2013. Makoko Floating School has received global recognition, including the Design Museum's Design of the Year Award. Makoko population is considered to be 85,840; however, the area was not officially counted as part of the 2007 census and the population has been estimated to be much higher. Queen Sheba, known by Ijebu people in Ogun State as Bilikisun Sungbo - a wealthy and childless widow from medieval times, was believed to be buried in a town there. The legend of the Queen of Sheba is one of history’s more fertile legends; over time, it has been re-imagined by Jewish, Islamic, Arabian and other many interpretations. Queen Sheba's story is widely recognized as a Biblical one, and the most popular account of it is that offered in the Bible; the story of her visit to King Solomon. In the Queen Sheba’s time with King Solomon, she was so astounded by the opulence and advancement of his court, as well as his wisdom, that she offered her respect for the King and the God of Israel, Yahweh. It is said that after spending time with Solomon, the Queen converted to his religion, Judaism. Other accounts of the Queen’s life go far further than this; some suggest the place of her birth as a nation in present-day Yemen. The Ethiopian account of Queen Sheba, or Makeda as she is called there, goes on to state that, on her way back, she had a child of King Solomon, named Melenik I. One of the less popular accounts of Queen Sheba comes, not from the middle east, or Ethiopia, but from Nigeria, in the town of Ijebu Ode. The Ijebu people claim that the Queen of Sheba was one of their noblewomen known as Oloye Bilikisu Sungbo. It is worth noting that this name ‘Bilikisu’ is the same name by which she is referred to in the Quran. In Ijebu-Ode, there is a medieval system of walls and ditches, over 160 kilometers long known as Sungbo’s Eredo. The locals claim that it was erected in honor of Queen Sheba, Bilikisu Sungbo. Ogbunike Cave in Anambra state was once an hideout for slaves during the colonial era. This is what it feels like crawling through it. Let me walk you through what you'll do if you choose to go to Ogbunike Cave. You'll most likely come in through Onitsha. The journey to Ogbunike will take less than one hour. The first thing you see before you proceed toward the Ogbunike cave is a sign that reads the rules and regulations of the cave. At the mouth of Ogbunike cave, you'll see basins with water dripping into them from roof of the cave. Drink up if you want. Drink as much as you Can, you'll be losing your breath in a bit. Oguta Lake has some Civil War significance. It is the place where two waters don't mix. The two rivers at Oguta were male and female; brown being male, green being female. The two Oguta rivers were Husband and wife who had a quarell, and have been separated ever since. In fact, there are two separate shrines where their worshippers go. Although you can call on any of them from any of the two shrines. We headed back, and made a stop first at what appeared at first to be an 18-hole golf course. Right under this abandoned golf course at Oguta is Civil War bunker used by Biafran Forces. The entrance looks like this, but the people we met there said it's so large, the next exit is at a road we couldn't even see from where we were. According to the people, the state government had the entrance of the bunker at Oguta blocked, because kidnappers were using the place to hide their victims. And off we went, back to Owerri. And then we thought, wouldn't it be nice to just drop by at the mosque to see the city's Imam? It sounded like a solid plan. This is a predominantly Catholic state.
